Joe and Olivene

There are two people captured in this photograph. The darkness gives it a somber feeling, although there is a bright ray of light that cuts sharply across the image. The lighting in this work is strategically powerful because it highlights the expressions of each person’s face. The woman sits with her hands folded together as if in a plea or prayer. She is looking at the man in a serious and engaging manner. The man sits leaning forward slightly. He does not look at the woman; instead he stares aimlessly at the ground. The man holds something in his hand, although the object is unidentifiable, perhaps alcohol. The photograph has serious feeling to it and it leads the viewer to have many unanswered questions. Who is the couple? What does the woman want? Why will the man not look at her? What is he holding? MacWeeney brings out the curiosity of the viewer yet he does not satisfy them with the answers.
