Knights of Pythias review (no. 1)
Parades
Michigan Avenue (Chicago, Ill.)
Knights of Pythias

Marked on the verso in pencil as "Knights of Pythias Review" by the photographer planner Edward H. Bennett, this photograph is identified as a Grant Park celebration in 1917 by William Hudson Harper, Chicago: A History and Forecast, 1921, p. 166. The Chicago Tribune in 1917 indicates a "celebration" in Lincoln Park, July 28, 1917; but there could have been a parade on Michigan Avenue. In addition, the Knights of Pythias are among the groups on parade for Memorial Day, May 30, that first spring of World War I. The vantage point is atop the Railway Exchange Building, the location of Bennett's office, the former Plan of Chicago office, 1906-09. This is one of series of similar photographs.

Grant Park (Chicago, Ill.)
This aerial view of Grant Park was possibly photographed from the Peoples' Gas Company building (completed in 1911) with Monroe Street going to Lake Michigan at the top. An alternative vantage point is from the top of the Railway Exchange Building, with Jackson Boulevard going toward Lake Michigan at the top.
At the bottom of the photograph are several pieces of railroad equipment on the Illinois Central tracks below grade: a steam engine, freight caboose, and a number of freight cars.
This is one of Bennett's study views capturing moments of the future Grant Park space, at that time an undeveloped fairgrounds.

Chicago River, buildings, and quay, Chicago
Chicago River (Ill.)
This is one of a series of study photos taken by Edward H. Bennett in preparation for design of Wacker Drive and redevelopment of the banks of the river west and north of the central business district.
This exact location remains to be identified. Possibly this is the Wolf's Point area which is on the west side of the Chicago River looking south at the Butler Brothers Building and and the Lake Street Bridge.

This view taken by Edward H. Bennett as a study image for redevelopment of the the Chicago river front, 1913-15, shows the Dearborn Street bridge, looking north. A trolley track follows the road north, with a street cleaner at work.
Businesses immediately north of the river at Dearborn and identifiable include: Hunter, Walton & Co., a dairy company housed in architect Henry Ives Cobb's distinctive 1895 Caravetta building (in 2010 Harry Caray's Restaurant) at 33 West Kinzie, a building relating to the former Chicago and Northwestern Railway station, and a sign on a warehouse for Italian-Swiss Colony "fine wines...."

This photograph shows, looking west, the south side of the Chicago River, then South Water Street, and a service quai for warehouses and lake boats. This is one of series of views taken in preparation for design of Wacker Drive and the Michigan Avenue bridge.
Across the river is a sign for the James S. Kirk & Co. soap company. Kirk, 1818-1886, was born in Glasgow, Scotland.

Bird's-eye views--1900-1910
A bird's-eye view watercolor sketch of Chicago and environs by Edward H. Bennett.
This is one of two such sketches found on a few pages of a scrapbook, retained by Bennett in 1953 when he donated much of his material to the Art Institute. Also located nearby in this removed section of a scrapbook is the image of Burnham writing at the work table in the Plan studio (perhaps but otherwise unprovable that DHB was caught in the act of drafting the text of the Plan). The organizing principle of these retained images seems to be personal mementoes of creating the Plan.
Thus, it appears to be one of two sketches perhaps shown to project artist Jules Guerin as guidance to him for his rendering of a bird's-eye view of Chicago's reach up the lake, etc. to appear as the frontispiece (opposite the title-page) for the 1909 Plan.

Daniel Burnham at San Francisco Bungalow
Burnham, Daniel H. (Daniel Hudson), 1886-1961
This 1905 photo by Edward Bennett, found in his personal scrapbook and consistent in size and character with other of his views, was published in Moore's 1921 biography, I., facing p.230. It shows Bennett's employer, architect Daniel H. Burnham, standing next to the San Francisco Plan studio bungalow built by Willis Polk for the firm on top of Twin Peaks, with the city stretched out below, behind Burnham here.
The site's separation from the city below also prevented interruptions.
