Description
An account of the resource
A black and white photo of the front of the Sports Center, which faces north. Numerous trees are visible in front of the entrance. This photograph clearly emphasizes the the self-effacing character of architect Edward Dart's design, minimizing its over 70,000 sq. ft. of interior space, a tour de force in the midst of this upscale residential area of lower, smaller estate homes.
"During the 1960's, as the student body was rapidly growing, there was a movement to increase athletics on campus. A commitee, headed by trustee Elliott Donnelley, funded the construction of Lake Forest College's Sports Center. Subject

Description
An account of the resource
A view of the Sports Center taken from the northwest corner of the building. Snow has accumulated on the ground and on the top of the building.
The architect was Edward Dart (1922-1975) of the Loebl Schlossman Chicago firm of notable modernist architects. Dart later designed Water Tower Place (early 1970s), North Michigan Ave., Chicago, then the largest concrete building. Dart also was the brother of Lake Forest's Susan Dart, Mrs. John T. McCutcheon, Jr. The style of the building is self-effacing, to lower its impact on residential Sheridan Road to the east, to the rear of this photo. It relates to the brutalist later modernist style, with few windows or adornments to cal attention to itself. It was much more pleasing and successful for the forty years until it was expanded to the north in a much less self-effacing manner in 2009-2010.
For more on Dart and his work, see Susan Dart's "Edward Dart, Architect" (Evanston: Evanston Publishing, 1993).

It also was shown in the 1979-made Academy Award Best Picture (1980) "Ordinary People" based on the novel set in Lake Forest.

Lake Forest College -- Buildings
Description
An account of the resource
This is a page from a College publicity or admissions brochure showing the Alice Home Hospital designed by Frost and Granger architects, 1899, and built on North Campus, facing west to Lois Durand Hall. The College focus leads to the title of the image "--Infirmary." Alice Home was an independent organization on College land, a cottage hospital on the mid 19th C. English model for rural areas. It served mostly the local or non-Chicago estate population; the latter normally used the Presbyterian and St. Luke's hospitals in the city. The building is in a half-timbered English Arts & Crafts Style, with a two-storied central block with one-story wings. This style was typical of partner Alfred H. Granger, who designed his own home at 907 N. Sheridan in 1897 and also the City Hall, 1899, and the east side Train Station, 1900, in the same historic and Arts & Crafts style.
