Description

Shown is the entry from Deerpath to the the Franklin P. Smith estate, Lake Forest, Illinois, in 1952. Mr. Smith, who married Daisy Durand, was in the iron fence business. The house shown was built east of the H. C. Durand house, Daisy's parents' place. It was built in 1900-01, architect not identified, in an English cottage style like the Durands'. The stone gate posts are from the spotted limestone used to built the First Presbyterian Church one block east in 1886-87 (Cobb & Frost, architects), Mr. Durand being the chair then of the Church's Building Committee. The ironwork would have come from Mr. Smith's shops. The landscape, according to a 1912 plan now at the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society, was designed by Ossian C. Simonds (O. C. Simonds).

The photo was a donation form Carol Blomquist, given to her by Daisiana Smith Giles, the daughter of the Smiths.
