Lake Forest (Ill.)

In the early 1920s Franklin P. and Daisy Durand Smith engaged Marshall & Fox, Chicago architects, to make additions and improvements to their estate. The changes were to the south, a great hall or entertaining room, a pool, and gardens (now demolished). This period image looks west from the east end of the pool, showing the 1901 Smith house east porch on the right, the new entertaining room's east facade beyond the pool in the center, and part of the garden near the ravine edge on the right or to the south. This photo is from a group of Durand/Smith family images, an archive given by the late Daisiana Smith Giles to Carol Blomquist and by her donated to Special Collections in the mid 2000s.
