This 32-page listing is a guide to portraits of Chicagoans (men) that appear in biographical and historical works published between 1868 and 1912, plus one composite photograph of pioneers in the city, from 1876. These works in chronological order are:
1868: Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men of Chicago. Chicago: Wilson, Pierce.
1876: Old Settlers/that resided in Chicagobefore 1840. Chicago: C. D. Moser.
1876: Biographical Sketches of the Leading Men of Chicago. Chicago: Wilson, Pierce. [This appears to have three editions, each one putting more pages onto the back of the book, from 128 pp. to in the 200 pp.]

1912: Notable Men of Chicago and Their City. Chicago: Chicago Daily Journal.
In the far right column there is an attempt to characterize the illustrations, whether they are engravings (sketches), photographic prints (albumen prints), or half-tone reproductions of photographs. These are all books, except of the the one-heet compaosite photograph, a print of a large photo taken of many cabinet photos linded up (Old Settlers... 1876).
All of the books listed here are owned by the College library's Special Collections. But only a very few have been scanned/digitized. This list can serve as an index to the titles, whether or not they are in this collecition.
The list was compiled by Lake Forest College libraray Special Collections student intern Ruja Shrestha '07, in early 2012 a doctoral student in Chemistry and the U. of Rochester.
