The Morris, Illinois-based photographer, as identified on the rear of the carte de visite, was "J. H. Crawford" or James H. Crawford, as identified on the photographer listing :Langdon's List of 19th and Early 20th C. Photograpers," at http://www.langdonroad.com/crtocy.htm .  Crawford's entry reports from the 1860 and 1870 U.S. Censuses that Crawford was born in 1833, in New York state, and was married to Catherine, born ca. 1834.  His son William born ca. 1858, succeeded him in the business, according to the 1880 census.

William Bross was the eldest son of Deacon Moses Bross (1792-1882) of Morris.
