Description

This is one of a series of study photographs taken by Edward H. Bennett, 1913-1915, in preparation for designing Wacker Drive, along the river north and west of the central business district, Chicago.

Shown in the upper part against the sky is a sign for the Chicago headquarters of the Peninsular Stove Company, a Detroit firm. It was one of the five most prominent Detroit stove firms in an era when Detroit was a dominant manufacturer. The office of the stove firm in Chicago was at 434 Canal Street, indicating that this shows the west side riverbank south of the future Union Station.

The warehouses also show a loading dock with horse-drawn freight wagons.
