Description
This photograph by Edward H. Bennett from 1913 - 1915, appears to be of the area near the old Union Passenger Station (1881-1923) located west of Chicago River. The view is through a truss bridge over the Chicago River at Adams Street, leading to a street with tall buildings on either side. The building on the right marked with a sign advertising Corticelli Silk Co. is 373 W. Adams. On a viaduct abutment, left, is the word "Pennsylvania" referring to the major rail line. The image also shows a horse-drawn "express" wagon going under the viaduct.
This location is the future location of the new Union Station, designed ca. 1917 by Graham, Anderson, Probst & White, Daniel H. Burnham's firm's successors (the new station's lead designer being Bennett's good friend, (William) Peirce Anderson.
