This photograph shows, looking west, the south side of the Chicago River, then South Water Street, and a service quai for warehouses and lake boats. This is one of series of views taken in preparation for design of Wacker Drive and the Michigan Avenue bridge.
Across the river is a sign for the James S. Kirk & Co. soap company. Kirk, 1818-1886, was born in Glasgow, Scotland.
