North Hall - From the southwest, showing the 1897 entry portico

Title

North Hall - From the southwest, showing the 1897 entry portico

Subject

North Hall -- Exterior

Description

Ivy is covering, partially, a portion of the building, showing also the state of the entry prior to the 1960s, when a modernist vestibule was installed under the portico. This view may date from the 1940s or 1950s, in the era when it was repurposed from a residence and classroom hall to the Administration building, ca. 1953. "Visual elements that refer to the Italianate style, such as the triangular pediments of the roof and the arched windows, may allude to the building it replaced. But North Hall's more simplified and classical detailing diverges from its predecessor and seems to defer to the eminence of Young Hall, then known as University Hall, perhaps reflecting the junior status of the Academy students in relations to their college-aged neighbors" (Elizabeth A. Birnbaum on North Hall in "Lake Forest College: A Guide to the Campus," 2007, pp. 34).
