Description

John Leslie Preston (1945-1994), Lake Forest College Class of 1968, participated in a summer, 1964 summer tutorial project at Miles College, Birmingham, Alabama. This is from a two-page spread in The Forester 1965, pp. 66-67: "Miles College Book Drive and Tutorial... Dr. Lucius H. Pitts, the President of Miles College, Alabama, spoke at a chapel [convocation program], pointing out that Miles is the only four-year negro school to most of the 2,000 negro high school graduates in the area. His talk prompted LFC students to ask what they could do to help. As a result, more than 2,000 books were collected by the students and faculty of LFC and sent to the College. During the summer several lake Forest students participated in a tutorial project at Miles, wok with high school, grade school, and college students." There are three other photographs reproduced with the story, none of them showing Preston. By the 1980s Preston was a pioneer, notable LGBT author of fiction, anthologies and non-fiction. After graduation in 1968, Preston worked briefly in the College's Registrar''s Office, before leaving the area.
