Derrick K. Gondwe, Lake Forest College Class of 1966, was born on May 14, 1942 in Mawali, and died in 2004. He served on the Gettysburg College faculty for twenty-seven years, and was that institution's first tenured person of color. At the College, 1962-66, Gondwe was very active in a wide range of activities. He played both soccer and basketball, under coach Triptow (a former pro basketball player). He is pictured in a substantial file of photographs in one view holding the catalog for an early 1960s exhibit here of African art. There are over a dozen views of him with a guitar and playing folk musci lwith students and the visiting professional folk singer, Joan Gauntlett.
After Lake Forest Gondwe continued his studies in economics, at the U. of Wisconsin--Madison (M.A., honors) and at the U. of Manitoba (Ph.D.). He published a book in 1992, Political economy, ideology, and the impact of economics on the Third World, and at Gettsyburg founded the African-American Studies program.
