"Early Spring"--Jackson Park Lagoon, Chicago; photograph by Mary McMasters

Description

This springtime view of the lagoons at Jackson Park, Chicago, was the first-place winer, out of 5,000 entries, in the 1933 Chicago Park District photography contest.

The creator, Mrs. McMasters, by 1940 was living in Lake Forest and took many classic photographs of local social life, parades, events, etc., working along with her spouse Ward McMasters who she had married in the 1920s. The family lived on Highview Terrace AVe., Northmoor Subdivision, between Sheridan Road and West Park, Lake Forest. The McMasters had two children, Dennis (architect) and Jean (Grost), also a photographer.

By the 1950s the family also had their own pharmacy, hobby shop and photo studio on Western Ave. south of Deerpath. Mrs. McMasters had volunteered at Chicago's Hull House (incl. Girl Scout leader), 1926-28. The family was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, as is their daughter Jean in 2012, who allowed this scan of her mother's prize photo to be made.
