Title

Chicago & North Western Railway diesel engine #4054, mid 20th c.,  and "Pioneer" steam locomotive, mid 19th c.

Subject

Chicago & North Western Railway

Description

This large format (approx. 14" x 11"), black and white photographic print is from the collection of late Glencoe resident William Crosby, now in Special Collections, Lake Forest College library. Crosby was a railfan, friend of Elliott Donnelley and colleague of his in restoring and maintaining Shay locomotives in the Chicago region.

The image, perhaps in advance of the 1948-49 Railroad Fair, Chicago, shows a company shop with the C & NW Ry's (founded 1848) earliest, or very early, steam locomotive, the "Pioneer," next to/behind the post-war (1945-49) EMD F3 diesel engine, in this case number 4054C, a version made beginning in early 1948--a century later.
