Denominational Distribution of Lake Forest College Student Enrollment, 1931-1956

Title

Denominational Distribution of Lake Forest College Student Enrollment, 1931-1956

Description

This is a typed table with handwritten emendations, from a file of older statistical compilations in the Registrar's Office files. Lake Forest was an historically Presbyterian school, and this shows a steady close to 20% Presbyterian enrollment over this quarter century, but in the high 20s in percentage of students enrolled in 1936-38, with a modest increase in the number of Jewish students from the single digits in the mid and late 1930s and 1940s to the higher twenties by the mid 1950s.

Other denominations gained substantially and by the mid 1950s Lutherans and Methodists combined equalled the number of Presbyterians and there were more Catholics than Presbyterians already by 1954-55, the year before the faculty held a lake Geneva retreat on being a Christian College. Anglicans/Episcolpalians were present in numbers equal to about half of the Presbyterian or Catholic numbers.
