Knoll Family, St. Paul, MN, History

Subject

Railroads--Employees

Description

This is a family history for Milton Louis Knoll, son of Louis Knoll, an immigrant from Canada to St. Paul early in the 20th C., who was killed in a construction accident, 1917. The late Louis's sons (George, Henry, and John Knoll) all went to work for the Great Northern Railway, headquartered in St. Paul, all brakemen except for Milton, who was not considered strong enough for this heavy work. He went into the office as an office boy, and years later retired ca. 1969-1970 from the post of auditor, after having played a significant role in merging the Great Northern with the Burlington Railroad, making the Burlington Northern (now part of BNSF).

Janet and Arthur Miller, Lake Forest College faculty (janet is Assistant Dean of the Faculty for Off-Cmapus Programs and Art is Archivist and Librarian for Special Colelctions, LIbrary), were related to Milton through Janet's mother, Edna Knoll, who was Milton's sister.  They also are pictured within this collection of family data sheets, documents, and photographs.

Louis Knoll's family in Canada and that of his spouse also are detailed.
