Description
The Papers of Dr. Virginia Stewart, History: 348. A Retrospective Art Exhibition of the Sculptures of Sylvia Shaw Judson Haskins, 1897 - 1978.
This finding aid was prepared for an archives course at Dominican University, River Forest, IL, taught by Douglas Bicknese, in the Fall semester, 2004. The project of creating the finding aid was carried out with his oversight by one of his graduate students, Karen Sterly.
Prof. Virginia Stewart's praciticum course in public history recrated the exhibit, shown in the Lake Forest College Durand Insitute gallery spaces, in 1998. It was the largest and first effort to bring together in a retrospective way all of her sculptural work that was practical (reasonably portable), and was based on assistance from the sculptor's duaughter, the late Alice Judson Hayes. Dr. Stewart also guided the students in researching haskins' work and and biography at institutions such as the Chicago History Museum (then the Chicago Historical SCoeity) and the Art Institute of Chicago.
When the exhibit was wrapped up, all of the students' projects and the exhibit work product were gathered together, organized by Prof. Stewart, and given to the Archives. it perhaps remains the best record of the locations and owners of the sculptor's work as of 1998. Also, it is a good summary of what was known at that time about her work and her life.
