Description
From 1999 to 2011 Arthur D. Dubin (1923-2011), who attended Lake Forest College in 1943 as part of his wartime service, donated thousands of photographic and related images to Special Collections, Lake Forest College library. In one of his early gifts this notebook of slides was included. In the early 2000s a student intern listed these from information on the slides, and adjacent. We then sat down with Mr. Dubin and showed him the slides and asked him to comment. These comments, new and corrected information, were then noted on the list. It remains a project for the future to create a new list based on these annotations; for the present, this is made available provisionally.
Dubin had had many copy slides made from his collection of photos, brochures illustrations, posters, etc. by Hedrich-Blessing, Chicago's leading mid-century (20th) architectural photographers, for use by him for lectures, to accompany articles and books, etc. Many of these may be in the collections he donated here, but the original may also have gone to other repositories--in particular the Indiana State historical Society library (Indianapolis, IN; mostly IN-related such as Penn RR, etc.) and the Barriger Library, U. of Missouri-St. Louis's Merchantile Library (mostly St. Louis related--such as American Car and Foundry works there). Pullman-related material, too, went to the Illinois State Archives, now the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, Sporinfield, IL (10,000 b & w 8 x 10 images mostly of Pullman created cars, but also other early Pullman material). As a result, many of these slide images may represent photos, illustrations, etc. that are not part of the collections of prints and brochures otherwise in this library.
It remains for a future project to inventory these images against the originals elsewhere in the collections and add here information about the location of the originals for each, if here. But this writer recalls many images here not seen elsewehere by him in the collection. These copies were made, very likely, from the 1950s to the 1980s, mostly.
