Historically, purple has been the color of royalty, aristocracy, and the imperial color of Ancient Rome. More recently, it has been associated with bravery and the Purple Heart award. Within magic, purple represents magic, psychic abilities, inspiration, and creativity. In nature it is rarely present which is why it is associated with more metaphysical things.
