Description
This postcard black and white image of the apparently newly completed and decorated Deerpath Hall women's residence hall reflected the mid 1950s elegant simplicity drawn from Asian and European modern design traditions. In the postwar era, the decade or so after the end of World War II, the new exposure to Japanese and European styles, suppressed for over a decade, inspired new interiors in the U.S. The screen, central ceiling light fixture, and sparse flower arrangement all owe a debt to Japanese traditional precedents. The Danish modern and other contemporary chairs reflect the new simplicity of the era, while the seating groupings are typical country house conversation arrangements, typical of the nearby suburban estate homes.
The walls and ceilings incorporate modern materials, linoleum-like floor tiles (no doubt made of asbestos) and acoustical ceiling ones, with economical fluorescent recessed ceiling lighting. The floor to ceiling un-patterned drapes on pull cords, draw drapes, allow for closing the windows off at night to provide privacy for those on the interior.
