The Rev. Dr. Gregory, formerly a professor at Wooster, remodeled the curriculum from first President Robert W. Patterson's Yale Plan of 1828, focused on classics. Gregory introduced other languages, including Sanskrit.

After Lake Forest Gregory played a key role in development of the Standard dictionary, used through the 20th C. as Funk & Wagnall's.
