Description
This is a view of Henry C. Durand's Lake Forest, Illinois, house on Deerpath, just east of Lake Forest College's North Campus, ca. 1880s-1900. This is a Queen Ann Style substantial residence for successful Chicago wholesale grocer Durand. This appears to be a view from the southeast of the southeast corner of the residence, with a side entrance, the entry being on the north side. There is a drive angling southeast through the property, across a lawn or savanna with trees. This first was built in 1860 for Captain James Stokes, who died in the Civil War in the early 1860s. It next was renovated in an Italianate manner by the Bradleys, he in insurance, Chicago--completed by 1867. Durand moved into the house in 1875, renovated as an English cottage. By 1910 it was renovated again as a classic house with a colonade for Clayton Mark, and it burned in 1912. In 1916 the Finley Barrells had a new Georgian brick house built on the site, now 747 E. Deerpath, designed by Frederick W. Perkins, and it still stands essentially unchanged. The Durand image was donated to the College by Carol Blomquist, Lake Forest, given to her by the late granddaughter of Mr. Durand and his spouse, Daisiana Smith Giles.
