Description
Shown are Mrs. and Mr. Henry Clay Durand, and Daisy Durand (adopted daughter, later Mrs. Franklin P. Smith), 1890s. They appear in their two horse open carriage in front of a house with an 1870s style veranda. The house may be theirs, at approximately the site of present day 747 E. Deerpath, though this has not been verified. Another image of them, perhaps in the same carriage and at about the same time, appears in the 1976 produced book of photos given out by the First National Bank of Lake Forest. In front their own house, it reflects late 1880s features characteristic of the Shingle Style and and the later Queen Ann style, perhaps in the mode of Henry Ives Cobb, who designed the nearby Presbyterian Church (1887, Cobb & Frost) and Durand Institute (1892).
The ca. 1870s gardenesque landscaping is shown in some detail: specimen shrubs and vines, and apparently there is one potted palm partially behind the horses, on the porch. Donated by Carol Blomquist from Daisiana Smith Giles, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Durand and daughter of their adopted daughter, Daisy.
