Hospital design by Cass Gilbert (New York), in the manner of Wrenn, for a competition for the Peter Bent Brigham Hosp.

Title

Hospital design by Cass Gilbert (New York), in the manner of Wrenn, for a competition for the Peter Bent Brigham Hosp.

Description

This design of Cass Gilbert's, appearing in the American Architectural League's 25th annual exhibition volume, 1910, shows influence of Christopher Wrenn's classic Royal Naval Hospital at Greenwich (England, near London), 17th C.  This, in turn, reflected Louis XIV's Chapel at Les Invalides, Paris.  Gilbert's version scales down and tones down this high classicism, adding iwth the red brick a colonial or Dutch character.  The design is for an administration building, with four floors surmounted by a Wrenn-like centered ower or lantern above the entry through a portico.
