Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, Bookplate

Title

Cavendish, Duke of Devonshire, Bookplate

Subject

Cavendish, William Duke of Devonshire, 1808-1891

Description

the Cavendish family's seat was Chatasworth, Devonshire; the Dukes of Devonshire.  It had a famous library, from the 18th C., perhaps the period of this plate (baroque style).  These large country house libraries grew out of the Enlightenment, from the late 17th C., with the royal Society, etc. and the advancement of learning and scientific investigation among the aristocracy.

For example, William Cavendish was the seventh Duke of Devonshire and Chancellor of the University of London from 1836 to 1856, then Chancellor of Cambridge University from 1861 to 1891. At Cambridge, he funded the building of the Cavendish Laboratory and endowed it.
