Subject

Lake Forest College--Herbarium

Description

This 5 x 7 black and white image shows a student, Sally Lears, Class of 1967, at work preparing a specimen for the Herbarium of Lake Forest College (Johnson SScience Center), probably under Prof. of Biology Elizabeth T. Lunn of Prof. Ken Wiek. The College's herbarium dates from the mid 1890s, when the College began a new herbarium to replace the 60,000-item personal one of College president John Merle Coulter when he left Lake Forest to becme head of botany at the University of Chicago. A student of Coulter's at Chicago, M. C. Jensen, returned to Lake Forest to begin work on the project, and one of those contributing was Cornelius Betten, Class of 1900, and on the faculty, 1906-16, and then on the Cornel faculty, where he had done his graduate study. A specimen gathered by Betten for the herbarium is shown in the College's history, "30 Miles North..." (2000), by Franz Schulze et al. The photo is located in the Archives photo subject file under "Herbarium".
